Trilliums, also known as Wake Robins, are some of the most beautiful Spring-flowering woodland treasures. As their name suggests everything is in threes - their foliage and flowers (three petals). Some have deep veining or stunning blotches on their foliage. They thrive in humus-rich soil in cool woodland or shady areas and do especially well under deciduous trees because they get good light in Spring when they flower and shade during the hot summer months. Trillium make perfect container plants too.
Trilliums can take 5 years or more to flower from seed so I was thrilled when these seedlings started to flower after three years. They are a mix of T. sessile, T. flexipes and crosses (none of them are T. chloropetalum, the most commonly known species). Flowers in shades of creamy-white to plum and burgundy - some with reflexed petals (arched backwards). Just glorious! Winter dormant. 30x30cm approx (eventually).
